Modern rest rooms that are about as modern as the rest of this abandoned stretch of Route 66.

I Found No Crows in Cuervo

Cuervo, New Mexico, is an old railroad town turned Route 66 stop turned ghost town that sits right off of Interstate 40.

Cafe Laurel

I stopped at Cafe Laurel while passing through Albuquerque along Route 66. The road was under construction for miles and a sandwich sign outside the restaurant caught my eye: "We are worth it!"

I'm not sure what "it" is, but they served up a nice omelette and coffee. And the Wifi wasn't bad either.

Rio Salado Sand Dunes Rest Area

I've been stopping at this rest area since I was a child. It has facilities and about a dozen picnic shelters on a raised deck over the sands. On my latest trip, it provided a safe place to stop and sleep in the car.

I wonder if non-portable fires are permitted in the shelters. ;)

The spiders are likely happy about the fire ban.

Steins

Steins, a New Mexico ghost town, was once home to about 1000 residents. Billboards along I-10 advertise tours, but none have been available since the property's owner, Larry Link, was murdered in 2011
