The Big Ditch formerly known as Main Street

Silver City's streets were platted in a grid pattern in 1871 without sufficient regard for the seasonal rainwater runoff. Rains in the summer of 1895 sent a river flowing down Main Street; destroying much of the town's busy business center. In 1902, flood waters turned what remained of Main Street into a big ditch -- parts of which are 60 feet deep.

Main Street is no more. The ditch is now a city park.

The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum is one of my favorite local history museums. It contains an eclectic collection of history and life in the Mimbres Valley. Admission is free.
