Cafe Laurel

I stopped at Cafe Laurel while passing through Albuquerque along Route 66. The road was under construction for miles and a sandwich sign outside the restaurant caught my eye: "We are worth it!"

I'm not sure what "it" is, but they served up a nice omelette and coffee. And the Wifi wasn't bad either.

Rio Salado Sand Dunes Rest Area

I've been stopping at this rest area since I was a child. It has facilities and about a dozen picnic shelters on a raised deck over the sands. On my latest trip, it provided a safe place to stop and sleep in the car.

I wonder if non-portable fires are permitted in the shelters. ;)

The spiders are likely happy about the fire ban.

Steins

Steins, a New Mexico ghost town, was once home to about 1000 residents. Billboards along I-10 advertise tours, but none have been available since the property's owner, Larry Link, was murdered in 2011

Tyrone Mine Reclamation

Over 3,000 acres of waste rock piles from the Tyrone copper mine have been capped, contoured, and reseeded to prevent erosion and contamination.

The Big Ditch formerly known as Main Street

Silver City's streets were platted in a grid pattern in 1871 without sufficient regard for the seasonal rainwater runoff. Rains in the summer of 1895 sent a river flowing down Main Street; destroying much of the town's busy business center. In 1902, flood waters turned what remained of Main Street into a big ditch -- parts of which are 60 feet deep.

Main Street is no more. The ditch is now a city park.

The Silver City Museum is a local history museum that is located in the H. B, Ailman House; the former home of the owner of one of the area's richest silver mines.
