This statue was erected by the city of Superior, Wisconsin, to honor the seaman of the Great Lakes.

SS William A. Irvin was the flagship of the US Steel Great Lakes Fleet from 1938 through 1975. Today, she serves as a museum and example of a classic lake freighter.
