Bombay Beach

Bombay Beach was once a vacation destination community on the shores of California's Salton Sea. Today it is about a quarter square mile of abandoned ruins and occupied trailer homes.

Beer, Ice, Bait

The demand for beer, ice, and bait on the shores of the Salton Sea is no longer what it used to be.

North Shore Beach & Yacht Club

The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club was once a popular place frequented by the rich and famous.

Today it sits mostly empty, as a reminder of its once great past. The vacationers are gone. The marina that once hosted hundreds of boats is gone. The Yacht Club building was renovated in 2010 but remains mostly unused.

Desert Center

The signs along Interstate 10 telling me the distance to "Desert Center" gave me the impression that there was civilization and facilities for motorists between me and Indio.

I exited the highway at Desert Center, California and found remnants from the past. I found no fuel. I found no food. I didn't even find the cold drink I was hoping to find. The only thing this place may be the center of is desert. Except for a US Post Office and what appears to be a California Department of Transportation equipment lot, the place appeared to be abandoned.

There are no services here -- unless you need to mail some desert sand or a tumbleweed back home.
